How to read poetry as a beginner

You do not need to decode every line at once. Read for sound and image first, then return to notice contrasts, repetitions, and shifts in tone.

A simple way to try it

  1. Read the poem aloud once.
  2. Underline an image or phrase that stands out.
  3. Ask what changes between the opening and ending.
