Find the main idea in a long reading
The main idea explains what the section is doing; details support, qualify, or illustrate it. Look for repeated claims, transitions, and the question the author returns to.
A simple way to try it
- Notice the first and last sentences of sections.
- Ask what each example is meant to show.
- Write one sentence that links the details.
